Baggage
Meet Baggage, she is 15 years old, and is a very deserving Pawsome Pet!
Baggage has very dedicated human parents who visit the Kaiapoi clinic for regular check-ups and fluids to avoid dehydration caused by kidney disease. These regular check-ups are very important, as they help to detect additional health concerns which may occur, so treatment can start before it becomes too much of a problem for Baggage.
Baggage originally came to us in 2017 with a history of radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism, she was straining to urinate, vomiting and had bladder problems, as well as a history of urinary tract infections. Tests were performed on her blood and urine, the results indicated decreased kidney function.
There are four stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Diagnosed in June 2017 with IRIS stage 2, Baggage is now stage 3, fluids can be given from this stage. However each patient is a case by case basis for treatment. Additional fluids depends on how they are coping with the disease, and how much fluid they are getting through their food and drinking. Baggage requires this weekly hydration, which is really helping. Her Dad, Alan, is an exceptional parent to Baggage, maintaining her care including the weekly visit to the clinic for fluids, and regular blood and urine tests.
Symptoms of CKD vary for all cats, but signs are weight loss, not wanting to eat, vomiting, drinking and urinating more than usual. Blood and urine tests can help indicate kidney function decline.
CKD is one of the most common conditions affecting older cats, and in most cases is progressive over time, so there is a gradual decline and worsening of the disease. The rate of decline varies considerably between individual cats. Although CKD is not a curable or reversible disease, appropriate support and treatment can both increase the quality of life, and prolong life by slowing down the progression of the disease.
