Canine Blood Donors Required
Rangiora Vet Centre requires canines to be part of our blood donation bank. In the past we have used dogs belonging to staff members, but unfortunately the number of these dogs that meet the right criteria has declined, so we are now asking the public for help.
Some of our heroes:
WOULD YOU CONSIDER ALLOWING YOUR DOG TO SAVE LIVES?
The procedure for blood donation is relatively non-invasive. Your pet is given a light sedation to help calm them down. A needle is then placed into their jugular vein and blood collection takes place until the required amount is received. They are then given some extra tasty food and monitored here at the clinic for a few hours before being discharged.
In order for your pet to be eligible, they need to complete the following check list:
Temperament – they must be friendly, well socialised and calm or the procedure becomes too difficult for patient and staff!
Over 25 kg and in good body condition (i.e. not underweight or obese)
Between 2-7 years of age
Never had pups
Not currently on any medications
Regular veterinary health checks, with vaccinations up to date.
Unfortunately, not every pooch is suitable. They may be ineligible for the following reasons:
Being treated for heart disease
Have seizures, or are on seizure control medications
Suffer from chronic illness or disease
Have recently received a blood transfusion
Breeds with short necks are not ideal.
THE REWARD
Apart from knowing that your dog has helped to save the life of a fellow canine you will also receive a ‘recovery pack’ with a few treats for your pet!
Plus they will also receive a voucher for a free annual vaccination and health check.
