Can my pet still eat properly with missing teeth?
The short answer is: Yes.
Most patients do not require drastic changes to their diet once their gums have healed - whereas often before treatment they were reluctant to chew their dry food, and simply swallowed it whole, or had a preference for soft food.
A small percentage of pets may require a softened diet longterm if they are missing more than 50% of their teeth.
Rabbits and rodents are the exception, in that if they require tooth extractions, they will require a more specialised softened diet longterm.
Our goal in veterinary dental care is for our patients to have mouths free of pain so it is much better to have no tooth at all, than to have an infected or broken tooth continually causing discomfort.
