What is involved in the cost of the dental procedure?

The cost of dental care for pets is directly related to the requirement for an anaesthetic, anaesthetist and the time & expertise required of a vet to perform a thorough exam and treatment, be it tooth extractions or more advanced procedures. Specialised equipment is required to provide a high quality service.

This equipment includes:

  • Anaesthetic monitors

  • Surgical instrumentation

  • An ultrasonic scaler and polisher to clean the teeth

  • Low and high speed drills and x-ray machinery.

At RVC we provide options for you and your pet based on your budget and what is in the best interest of your pet.

CASE STUDY - Sophie

Sophie is a great case to show how important dental x-rays are as part of a complete dental exam, and also that even one year old cats can have serious dental disease.

Sophie Left Side

When Sophie presented to our dental team,  her owner noted she was showing a clear preference for soft food over biscuits and wasn’t grooming herself very well.

Once Sophie was anaesthetized, she had a systematic oral exam that included dental probing, ultrasonic scale and full mouth dental radiographs.

Her oral exam revealed many deep gum pockets around her teeth but her radiographs confirmed just how severe her dental disease was under the gumline.

Sophie Right Side

Without dental radiographs, studies have shown up to 70% of dental disease goes undetected.

While Sophie unfortunately required quite a few tooth extractions, her owner was delighted to report she was soon back to acting like a kitten again, and even eating biscuits quite happily.
